Following the release of his 3-track EP 'Pulp Noir', Flex caught up with British artist Léks Rivers to find out more about what influences his eclectic alt-R&B and hip-hop sound. If you enjoy Léks Rivers' picks be sure to check out 'Pulp Noir' at the end of the article.
1.Thin Lizzy - Dancing in the moonlight
An English pub banger from an Irish band no less, everyone’s heard it everyone loves it and with good reason, Thin Lizzy have a number of hits but dancing in the moonlight takes top spot for me with that primal bassline that forces you to move even if you pretend you don’t like it, the brass the guitars wailing and that solo all accompany Phil Lynott pure rock voice and deliver with fervour and force.
2.Giggs & Dubz - Pain Is The Essence
A certified legendary hood classic, Dubz dancing on the beat dropping some of the coldest bars of all time with Giggs in the number 10 role just pulling the strings while the piano synth beat keeps the momentum rising til you’re ready to run through a brick wall. A flawless victory in descriptive wordplay that paints the picture of street life and what it really means.
3.Thundercat - Them Changes
A song to me that’s about heartbreak and what it does to a soul and how you’re never the same after, beautiful live instruments paired with classic 70s psychedelic funk feel. A heartless ode to becoming something what’s inevitable after being betrayed. I love the bass guitar and the way it melds with the somber story of loss.
4.The Strokes - Reptilia
Ah The strokes the last true rocknroll band
Those Frank Sinatra esque vocals bellowing some of the most sincere lyrics you’ll ever hear if you could read someone’s mind, and it’s that with latches listeners like me to a record like reptilia, it’s honest no bullshit it’s hey get the fuck away from me it’s you’re hot let’s dance!
5.Jai Paul - BTSTU
Though it’s number 5 I’ve saved the best for last this tour de force auteur performance hailing from a west London bedroom has more innovation and influence embedded into its seams than anything created in the last decade worldwide there I said it & meant it. Btstu stands for back to save the universe and I think he just may have!
