Following the release of their latest single 'Got To Go', Flex caught up with UK band Molly Gone Mad to discover what influences their Funk and Soul sound. If you enjoy Molly Gone Mad's picks, be sure to check out 'Got To Go at the end of the article.
1. Use Me - Bill Withers
A song steeped in soul and funk, it's one I will never forget. The character in every musicians playing, the groove, the vocal delivery, all of it I love and can't get enough of.
That funky vibe really speaks to me, and something I always want to have in my drumming.
With a simple backbone to track, subtle variations and an extremely well put together song, makes this one a timeless classic for me, and one that will continue to influence my playing and songwriting behind any instrument.
2. Rust -Yussef Dayes, Tom Misch
Known for his jam approach and amazing skills behind the kit, Yussef Dayes has been a massive inspiration to my drumming, and this song in particular was one Molly Gone Mad used to experiment with a lot. It’s got so much soul and expression, an entire euphoric, mystical world opens up when I listen to it, and being able to find that feeling through playing and writing music makes up so much of why I do it. Tom Misch as well has long been one of my favourite artists to listen to, his funk/jazzy/soul music has been an inspiration to the way I write music, long before I realised it’s what I wanted to do.
3. Here but I'm Gone -Curtis Mayfield
The mix and instrumentation in this song are so colourful whilst the song holds quite dark space. The landscape is so absorbing and every instrument is played with such flair. I love this more melancholy version of soul, they’ve got some of the hardest beats in existence. Curtis Mayfield’s voice is sensational. Not to mention how good the lyrics are. I would hang this song in a golden frame and put a bench about 8 feet away. I think it’s perfect.
4. Off The Will -Michael Jackson
Again, the musicianship and placement of notes is beyond incredible. The chorus is a drug. The first time I heard this song my whole body was simply detached from thought and I started dancing. The groove is through the roof. Michael Jackson’s vocal performance is mind blowing.
5. Life’s Too Fast - High Fade
The theme of all our favourite songs is great musicians at the core, who have a profound dedication to their craft. High Fade are no different. High Fade crushing a song which sounds as massive as this with only three dudes is a testament to how good they are. Their abilities on their instruments and as a band make you re-wire how you thought music could be played. The cherry on top of all of this goodness is a monster guitar solo. Three people, in a room, turned up to 11. Ideal.
