Falling for a friend is a feat that doesn’t come easy, and Beks explores the aftermath of such a situation in her rousing new release ‘The Thing About Us’.
A burst of pure electro pop, the track is filled with bouncy synths and a captivating chorus, as the Sydney singer-songwriter pours out her heart within the lyrics. The partnering music video perfectly captures the essence of the song, as a range of colourful hues light Beks up in various moments throughout the tumultuous relationship, from moments of bliss that consist of joyous blues and greens, to the more heartbreaking and passionate experiences, that are soaked in reds, pinks and greys. Elaborating on the real life influences of the track, she explains, “This song encapsulates the feeling of being in love and then out of love with your best friend. Your best friend that you party and wake up hungover with and then realise that you’ve crossed a line of no return, blurred the boundaries and you’re desperate to find a way back. The thing about us is there was never an ‘us’ only ever ‘you and I’”.
Co-written with Cam Nacson and Xira, the track is an exciting change of direction for Beks, who was previously a member of the riotous punk band Rackett before deciding to embark on a solo career. Despite only debuting on the scene a short while ago, she has already had notable success, and gained critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine and Music Feed for her sound, which channels Robyn and Dua Lipa.
Taken from her mixtape ‘Beks 2021’, the track is the perfect break-up anthem that is sure to resonate with many worldwide.
