China Bamboo are back to get us in our feels with their recent release ‘Ambivalence (For You)’. Made up of four life-long friends from Brighton, China Bamboo is storming the scene with their beloved brand of ‘Bubblegum Goth’. Showcasing the fundamental force of female vocals, China Bamboo continue the legacy of bands such as Alvvays and Cocteau Twins. Blurring genre-binaries, and being utterly stylish all the while, China Bamboo carve out a space unique to them in the musical landscape. With a sound rich with swimming synths and slick guitar riffs, this Brighton based band is making waves in the music scene all across the country. Their debut single ‘We’ve Disconnected’ was picked up by BBC Introducing and has earned them over two thousand streams already. Rightfully so. The track is rife with lush guitar licks and a chorus so catchy you’ll be humming it under your mask for days. Back with an undeniable banger, China Bamboo build on their momentum with their winter anthem ‘Ambivalence (For You)’.
Radiating the rich energy of four young musicians on a mission, ‘Ambivalence (For You)’ is rooted in the traditions of electro-pop. But, as always, China Bamboo sprinkle their special sound over the smooth soundscape with spacious synths and a slapping bass line. The idea of the song was birthed by lead singer Ruby, yet it was given a new lease of life with bandmate Danny’s take on the forgotten idea - and we couldn’t be more grateful. The overriding theme running throughout the track is that good is temporary and the sadness gets real; yet, it’s safe to say that China Bamboo is anything but temporary. Ethereal vocals and subtle synths caress you throughout this track, as captivating cascading guitar melodies provide a beautiful call and response throughout. On a course of airwave domination, China Bamboo’s recent single further inaugurates the group as a hot one to watch this year; there’s no chance we’ll be ambivalent on this one.
