Belgium-based singer-songwriter BIRTHE is a fantastic addition to the music industry. With the release of her most recent single, "Boy Bye," she is once again empowering herself via her creative process in preparation for the release of her forthcoming album early next year.
As BIRTHE prepares for what will be her most significant musical year to date, her discography speaks for itself. With her impressive record of achievements, it is anticipated that she will achieve even more success in the music industry in 2024.
We sat down with BIRTHE to discuss her music and much more. Here is what she had to say:
Hey BIRTHE, welcome to FLEX! How are you?
Hi! Everything is going very well at the moment. I have a crazy year ahead of me with lots of new music and shows coming up and feel very honored to be here!
Congratulations on your brand-new single 'Boy Bye' - what inspired this particular tune?
Thank you! Well, when you listen to the song at first, you might think it's about something happy. But it's actually about being cheated on in a relationship and how you deal with it. I wrote this song after my break up. So it's really about letting go of the bad stuff that comes with it and moving on. Many people blame themselves when they've been cheated on and become insecure. That's why I felt the need to make a song that emphasizes that it's never your fault and that you have to let go of someone if they cannot see your value and beauty.
And do you have to be in a certain mood to write?
Most of the time, yes. For me, songwriting happens very spontaneously, usually based on how I'm feeling at a specific moment. Sometimes I try to go back to specific moments in the past when my emotions were very strong and start from there.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was so much fun! For this song, I worked with the Belgian producer 'OSKI'. I came to him with a basic idea for the chorus and horn section. Together we developed it into what it has become today. In addition, I had the honor to work with one of the best musicians in Belgium, which made the whole process extremely enjoyable. I am therefore very proud of the end result.
For viewers who don't know BIRTHE, how would you describe your sound?
I think my fans would describe my sound as a clear, international, and powerful voice with a soulful touch. I guess I would describe my sound as a combination between the past and the present because I make use of live instruments in combination with electronic sounds. My trademark would be incorporating strings and wind instruments into my music. I also don't try to avoid heavy topics in my songs, but at the same time, I always try to highlight the positive. Besides that, I don't like to limit myself to one genre. I think other influences can be found in my music, such as funk, jazz, and R&B, apart from my main genre Pop/Soul.
And what are some of those activities that you engage yourself in when you aren't writing or recording in the studio?
I like to be creative in every way. So when I'm not songwriting or recording, I'm probably coming up with concepts for my shows, music videos, or cover arts. Apart from that, you can find me listening to other artists or shopping a new outfit. I also enjoy cooking, dancing and watching a movie while cuddling my dog.
