Medeni reaches breaking point on her powerful new single ‘Overwhelmed’

There's a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from appearing functional long after something inside has begun to collapse. And on her latest offering ‘Overwhelmed’, Welsh alt-pop artist Medeni captures that hidden strain with striking clarity, turning the aftermath of a controlling relationship into a song about isolation, anxiety and the decision to stop pretending everything is manageable.

The track centres on the distance between the automatic reassurance of “I’m fine” and the far more complicated truth beneath it. She writes from the position of someone who gave too much, absorbed too much and gradually became separated from the people who might have recognised the damage. By the time the emotion reaches the surface, the song is the inevitable result of pressure left unattended.

And Medeni’s voice is central to that tension. Its lower, huskier character gives the performance a sense of lived experience, carrying weariness and defiance without forcing either quality. Comparisons to Adele and RAYE feel understandable in the song’s combination of emotional directness and contemporary pop scale, though Medeni’s perspective is shaped by a distinctly personal sense of displacement.

Produced and mixed by Laurence Love Greed, with mastering by Natalie Bibby, the track introduces the wider EP of the same name. The project explores the consequences of controlled love rather than reducing the experience to one dramatic moment. Anxiety, careful behaviour and emotional suppression accumulate over time until the person carrying them can no longer continue in the same way.

As the opening statement from that cycle, ‘Overwhelmed’ establishes an atmosphere of contained intensity. The song’s power appears to come from allowing restraint and release to exist together.

There is no neat resolution offered here. Leaving the burden behind doesn't immediately undo its effects. And the larger EP campaign promises to examine that aftermath across several releases, including the forthcoming ‘Easier Said Than Done’ and ‘Til My Grave’.

‘Overwhelmed’ begins that journey at the point where silence is no longer sustainable. It's raw without becoming uncontrolled, dramatic without losing intimacy and forceful without disguising the vulnerability underneath.

Medeni has weathered the storm, but this song doesn't pretend she emerged untouched. It documents the moment she finally stopped carrying the damage as though it were hers to protect.
