Ormiston has released the retro video to his latest alt-chillwave track ‘Rebel’ as a homage to the 80’s, box tvs and quality fashion.
The Montreal-born artist has us romanticising the decade through a Top Of The Pop’s-style ‘Live’ performance. Colourful, flashing lighting match the vibrancy of the track while misty, vaseline lens creates the perfect 80’s look. The shots cleverly flick between the plain visual and the visual being played on the screens behind them - switching up the effects to keep you on your toes.
Speaking about the production studio vibes of the music video, director Ariel Poupart says: "Along with Ormiston, we decided to go with a Top of the Pops setting for his musical performance. I loved the texture of the song Rebel that felt very analogic to me. I wanted to recreate that same texture through the images and got very inspired by everything that could alter the image. When we settled on using old cathodic televisions as a means to distort and modify the visuals, I got very enthusiastic and so we got 13 of them!"
Ormiston was raised around female musicians and grew up with a strong sense of melody. After mixing and producing some tracks for Milk & Bone, Heartstreets, Misage and Freida Mari, he released in 2013 the song ‘Typically Her’ (under the name Beverlay) that ended up being remixed by Kaytranada, helping it reach more than 3 million streams worldwide.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, keep your eye on Ormiston.
