Following the release of their sophomore 10-track album 'Walk Among the Poppies', Flex caught up with Boston Indie-Rock band Major Spark to discover what influences their hard-hitting sound. If you enjoy Major Spark's picks, be sure to check out 'Walk Among the Poppies' at the end of the article.
1. Supermarket Avenue. "Tell Me No"
We love the simple drum groove on this song. The vocals are beautiful, and the horn part is a nice compliment.
2. Spoon. "The Way We Get By"
The piano and the vocal hook are excellent on this song. Spoon influenced our approach to the song "Mountains" on our new album. We aimed for a staccato pounding rhythm - something Spoon are adept at employing.
3. Parts & Labor. "Rest"
We love this song. Great driving drums with a verse vocal melody we probably copied at some point. This song influenced the writing of "I'll Make It Up To You"
4. Hinds. "Trippy Gum"
Big fans of Hinds. We saw them play Boston this year. Fantastic energy. This is an older song which features a fun rhythmic change. While the song did not directly influence a specific track - their energy definitely seeped into our approach to writing.
5. The Black Angels. "Bloodhounds on my Trail"
We challenge you to listen to this song and NOT turn it up to 11. The urgency and tone of the guitars make the song move - and there's a great harmonica part underneath. The lyrics are a good combination of poetry and setting a visual scene. "I'm hiding in the tall grass with God and Vernon Howell..."
