Following the release of her latest single 'Made For', Flex caught up with rising UK artist Reigns to find out more about what influences her genre-bending sound of soul, pop, and contemporary R&B. If you enjoy Reigns' picks be sure to check out 'Made For' at the end of the article.
1. Dido - White Flag
There’s a really sentimental story behind why I love this Dido song. I guess you could say it was the start of my music journey. At a school talent competition, my friends kicked me out of their dance group and so I told no one and secretly learnt the Dido song to my parents astonishment who heard me on stage for the first time singing this tune… I won the talent show and this song will always have a special place in my heart!!
2. P!nk - Who Knew
Growing up, I’ve always been a fan of pink. She inspired me for as long as I can remember to be a totally authentic artist who doesn’t follow the boundaries that people around her set. Her songwriting across so many of her tunes inspired me to write my first song when I was 10 years old and I’ve been a fan of her ever since. Who knew was one of the first songs I heard as a teenager that mixed both an emotional message along with her statement pop rock style that still gives us the attitude we know and love.
3. Teddy Swims - Lose Control
The first thing about Teddy Swims that had me hooked was the tonality of his voice. It was so refreshing to hear such a unique gritty vocal matched with such heart wrenching lyricism and this is definitely something that I relate to so the second I heard this tune matched with his vocals I knew I was a Teddy Swims fan through and through.
4. Raye - Oscar Winning Tears
Ray is such an inspiration to me as she definitely paved the way for independent music and made me realise that I wanted to be an independent artist and that it could be done. Her mixture of influences as well as her uniqueness definitely sets her apart from so many artists and that’s something I feel blessed to witness and hopefully on my own journey get to do too!
5. Chris Stapleton - Tennessee Whiskey
Chris Stapleton.. this man can SANG! This tune caught my attention the first time I heard his raspy voice mixing country vibes with soulful blues vocals that you can’t help but listen to over and over again. A lot of people don’t actually know that this is actually a cover, but Chris Stapleton made the song so unique and I think there’s real power to be able to do that as an artist!
