Following the release of her latest single 'Awkward Social Situation' we caught up with Edinburgh-born indie artist Ailsa McEwan aka Ailsa and the Seahorses to find out more about what goes into her eclectic sound. If you enjoy Ailsa's picks be sure to check out 'Awkward Social Situation' at the end of the article.
1. So Real - Jeff Buckley
If a dream was a song. I first heard it when I was 16 and felt I had found the perfect song - haunting, dreamy, cool and something so mysterious about it. It has a melancholy that I can’t quite put my finger on. Back in my teenage years I was obsessed with Grace, listening to it religiously multiple times a day, every day for months.
2. Topical Solution - Duster
The best combination of sad and chill. It has something hypnotic about it. Love the weird production and barely audible vocals. I’m a big fan of slowcore and minimal things all about the vibes.
3. One of Us Cannot Be Wrong - Leonard Cohen
I love songwriters who fall into the poet category. This is my favourite Cohen song. the lyrics always intrigued me. There’s a lot going on - yearning, suffering, unrequited love and a little bit of insanity; still it’s a bit difficult to decipher for me but is pure poetry. It has bitterness, heartbreak but simultaneously seems funny or sarcastic at times. For me, it’s his yelling at the end that really makes it - raw emotion and slightly unhinged.
4. Sara - Fleetwood Mac
I have developed a strong love for Fleetwood Mac in recent years. This song has a magical nostalgia to it that carries you away. Stevie Nick’s vocals have such a power and emotion to them here - a beautiful otherworldly experience.
5. Catch Your Eye - Andy Shauf
Really enjoyed his album ‘Norm’ lately; a concept album from the perspective of a stalker and at points God also, what’s not to like? I love the dreaminess of this song which initially appears as something very beautiful and chill, but listening to the lyrics you begin to see inside the delusional mind of the stalker and start to feel something off. Very sinister, I’m a big fan.
