Following the release of his latest single 'Fault Line', Flex caught up with Utah-based singer-songwriter Caleb Darger to find out more about what influences his sound. If you enjoy Caleb's picks be sure to check out the poignant 12-track offering 'Fault Line' at the end of the article.
1. Myth - Beach House
This song is the perfect opener to Beach House’s “Bloom”. I was mesmerized the first time I heard it and still whenever I listen I am instantly transported to a different dimension. Victoria Legrand sings mostly in a lower register, leaving room for the guitars and synths to balance out the higher register. The lyrics are profound yet relatable. One of the greatest songs ever recorded in any era and in any genre.
2. Bob Dylan - Love Minus Zero/No Limit
This song is from Bringing’ it All Back Home, the album that Dylan first went electric. It’s my favorite Dylan album and this is a standout track. Like all great Dylan songs, the imagery in the lyrics is captivating. Who knows what he was really writing about, but the lyrics make me think of the confidence and sense of security that comes with being in a relationship where each partner truly accepts the other exactly as they are.
3. Delta Spirit - Golden State
It’s hard for me to choose just one Delta Spirit song, but this song is such a fun one and showcases the vocal range of Matthew Logan Vasquez. The lyrics are about how brutal touring can be but how the relationships kind of make it all worth it. Every time I hear it I just want to hit the road.
4. Coco - Empty Beach
This song is so calming. The harmonies are absolutely beautiful and the voices blend together perfectly. It’s a great reminder that sometimes less is more when it comes to production.
5. Howdy - El Paso
Lately I have been coming back to this song a lot. I love the pedal steel guitar arrangement, which I recently learned the singer plays, so that’s pretty cool. The lyrics are very relatable to me as a small-time artist trying to get people to care about my music and come out to my shows.
