Following the release of his latest single 'Feel The Way I Do (feat. Chrxstal Sarah)', Flex caught up with UK producer Ch!mes to find out more about what influences his glitchy, immersive sound. If you enjoy Ch!mes picks, be sure to check out 'Feel The Way I Do' at the end of the article.
1. Ludovico Einaudi - Experience
I love this track for its emotive soundscapes and driving rhythm as the track gradually builds intensity with the light percussion but particularly the rhythmic swirling strings. It puts you into a contemplative state. This is what inspires me to make music from a place of emotion or experiences.
2. Flume - Road To: Tokyo
I like this track for the distorted dream-like nature of it. It gives me the feeling of spacing out in the middle of a highly advanced neon lit city. This inspires me because it provides a scene in your head which I like to create for listeners.
3. Somni - Overgrown
The trippy character of this track gets me inside my own head; building a busy world of things. I appreciate the way a lot of ambient textures are used here such as white noise, clicks, reversed samples etc. It makes the track sound otherworldly.
4. Stromae - Fils de joie
This track by Stromae interests me because of the flawless mixture of african/south american beats with european melodies. The track sounds very cool and stylish, showcasing music’s versatility within cultures.
5. Kaskade - Silent Night (feat. Ilsey)
A friend of mine gave me the Kaskade Christmas album years ago and this track here caught my ear with the beautiful sound design with the bassline as well as the pulsating beats. It gives Silent Night a darker but very dreamy feel. Really inspiring stuff!
