Following the release of her latest single 'Selfish', Flex caught up with TikTok sensation and rising pop artist Claire Boyer to find out what influences her eclectic sound. If you enjoy Claire's picks, be sure to check out 'Selfish' at the end of the article.
1. Out of the Woods - Taylor Swift
My all-time favorite Taylor Swift song, the catchy melody with her emotive vocals gives me chills every time. The upbeat and emotional lyrics hook anyone who listens, and that’s what I aspire to create. This song has one of my all time favorite bridges, and it inspires me to write and perform bridges as the climax of the song.
2. Hearts a Mess - Gotye
This song combines elements that I aspire to bring into my music. The classical strings in combination with the dry vocals create a captivating environment. I love how the strings turn into vocals towards the end of the song. This song has long moments of no vocals and just the instrumental, and I love how this offers suspense.
3. Love - Lana Del Rey
I love Lana Del Rey. Just had to put that out there. Her songs are hauntingly beautiful, and “Love” is a song that captures the deep and emotional feeling of young love. Her voice and tone is so effortless in this track. I’m inspired to capture the alto leaning voice parts of this song into my music, as they offer so much emotion and clarity.
4. Soap - Melanie Martinez
I love Melanie Martinez's experimentation with her music. She uses unique sounds to give the music a more playful and nostalgic sound. “Soap” combines elements such as the popping bubbles with the classical strings. This song works beautifully.
5. Desperado - Rihanna
This song successfully combines Rihanna’s crisp and stunning tone with outstanding musical elements. The bass and the vocals blow my mind, and work perfectly with the soulful and sensual lyrics. I love the adlibs and how they mimic the beat/music.
