5 Songs I Love w/ Coruja Jones

Alice Smith

Following the release of his latest single 'The Day I Die', we caught up with Manchester-based singer-songwriter Coruja Jones to find out more about what inspires his eclectic sound, if you enjoy Coruja's picks be sure to check out 'The Day I Die' at the end of the article.

1. Momentary – Caoilfhionn Rose

I’ve had this on repeat lately, it’s from her latest album Constellation. Caoilfhionn (pronounced Keelin) is an amazing Manchester-based singer-songwriter (where I’m based), I had the pleasure of supporting her a few years ago. This track has a beautiful poignancy, it’s melancholic but filled with hope, as well as acceptance. It’s like the deep breath, then recovery after something big has happened in your life.“Everything is momentary All your pain momentary Love displaced momentary”

2. Bubble - King Creosote & Jon Hopkins

This collaboration was a huge inspiration to my upcoming EP ‘Undo’. It’s on an amazing album called Diamond Mine by King Creosote and Jon Hopkins. The whole album is just amazing. I could put every track on this list, but I chose Bubble. The combination of electronic influences and acoustic instrumentation is totally bag, me and Sam Vicary, who produced the EP, are big fans.

3. Hiding Out In The Open - Feist

I’m a huge Feist fan, I love her guitar style, writing style, attitude, the way she seems to approach life and projects, her incredible voice. I managed to see her Multitudes live concert, and it was probably the best show I’ve ever been to. It started off in the round, then cut to her live band…she also entered the room filming from a phone which was projected onto a screen…I looked down…and Leslie Feist was next to me crawling on the floor. If I become 1/4 of the artist she is, I can die happy. This track, ‘Hiding Out In The Open’ I particularly love on her latest album.

Opening a song with the line “Everybody’s got their s***, but who’s got the guts to sit with it?”… what a legend.

4. So You Are Tired -  Sufjan Stevens

It’s very difficult to choose a track from Sufjan Stevens, but I chose this from his latest album Javelin. When I heard this, it took me back to when I first discovered him, he went through a mad electronic phase, but this album I felt like he went back to his roots, but with a fresh twist, and I think more fragility in his writing. This track is just so brutally honest, and honesty is a huge theme in my current work. Also, this has also been a theme in my life, being tired, as I have a small child. He’s a genius, and I will listen to him for the rest of my life.

5. Through The Dark - KT Tunstall

Throughout my life, I always come back to this track from KT Tunstall. It’s the final track on her debut ‘Eye to The Telescope. KT had a big influence on me as a young musician, and inspired me to write. Her lyricism is second to none. It’s a gem of a track, which I hold dear in my heart.

“As I walk away, I look over my shoulder to see what I’m leaving behindPieces of puzzles and wishes on eyelashes fadeOh how do I show all the love inside my heart?

Well this is all new, and I’m feeling my way through the dark”
