We sat down with InBetween Honey after the release of her stellar new tune 'It's Alright', to discuss what influences shaped their unique sound. Be sure to check out the single at the bottom and follow them on socials!
Dylan’s pick:
Bleachers - Good Morning
Bleachers have always been an influence for me. “Good Morning” in particular was the inspiration for the name of the band with the opening line, “Woke up, I'm in the in-between honey”. From lyrics, to instrumentation and production, Jack Antonoff has been a massive inspiration for me.
JohnPaul’s pick:
The Stone Roses - Sally Cinnamon
From the joyous guitar intro to Ian Brown's fantastic lyrics, this song had my first listen 12 years ago. “Sally Cinnamon” brings me immense joy and I associate it with nearly any happy moment I've had in my life, including being in the band up to this point. It is also a song that I listened to for the first time with a close friend that is no longer with us and will always remain a huge part of my life and I remember this when writing music.
Matty’s pick:
The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
This song was a massive influence on me since the start of my music days and one of the main reasons why I got so passionate about playing music. This song made me realise that music and drumming in particular was something I just had to do in life. From the minute the orchestrated violins come, how can one not fall in love with the song? Richard Ashcroft sings the lyrics with such passion too, creating a feeling which we aim to recreate through our own lyrics. The song also reminds each of us of our first group holiday together to Manchester where all of us clicked musically as it's such an inspiring city for any band. Over the trip, I had this song was on repeat constantly with the intention of annoying the group but it was all for my own personal enjoyment, of course - we love a good laugh together. The one line of any song I will always remember is, “You’re a slave to the money, then you die.”
Dan’s pick:
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory
Oasis is obviously a big band for us and always will be! “Morning Glory” gives the anthemic sound we strive to have. Back in 2019, while on the trip to Manchester already mentioned for Matty’s 21st birthday, we went to see The Amazons in The Academy and they played a cover of this song, which will personally stay with me for as long as I live! Pure excitement and wholesome content all round. We also visited the Mancunian suburb of Burnage, the hometown of the Gallagher brothers while we were on this trip.
Ciara’s pick:
Otherkin - All That Remains Won't Be The Same
One band that has to be mentioned is Otherkin with their track "All That Remains Won't Be The Same". All five of us grew into our adult years with an Otherkin-based soundtrack to our social lives as we were all individually huge fans of their music and overall sound. We have various memories of watching them live together at gigs and festivals amongst our group of friends when InBetween Honey was starting out. We listened to them a LOT so naturally we would be inspired. I chose this song in particular as it was their first release that I recall featuring synth tracks, which was especially inspiring for me when writing short synth motifs and creating patches. We also loved the use of the siren in this song which we used on our track "One Home". It was also such an honour for us to have the opportunity to record some of our earlier releases with the lads, Dave and Luke, in the Clinic Recording Studio in Dublin.
