We sat down with JINBO the SuperFreak after the release of his stellar new album 'SUMMER FREAK', to discuss what influences shaped his unique sound. Be sure to check out the single at the bottom and follow him on socials!
Tyler, The Creator - LEMONHEAD
Okay. I see some similarities between him and I. He’s the Creator, I’m the SuperFreak. We
stated our identities in our names. The brass/bass line of this song and my song ‘Guronsan’ are the same. Though, I took this brass/bass line to a different universe. I shifted gears three times in my song and added some grown man sexy mood to it. I’ve also plugged in some digital glitch. But anyhow, I love Tyler, The Creator’s creativity and his obsession for perfection. His videos are just amazing every time he drops one. I’ve been loving his music for a minute now and his production for other artists is getting my attention more and more these days.
Pharrell Williams - Yellow Light
I had an EP idea called ‘YELLOW’. When I read about how yellow doesn't have a cool tone and just has a warm tone it made me think ‘hmm..is that why we see the Sun as yellow?’. Since then yellow has been a symbol of positivity to me. My new album has a lot of yellow, and so does Pharrell’s music. Especially this. This song has a whole lot of positivity and playfulness. And the production, the sound is on point. As much as I enjoy Pharrell’s music, I also study his production. Among a million songs he produced, this song stands out for these reasons. Simplicity, choice of sounds, choice of effects, transition between A section and B section and C, vocal editing, mixing, song structure. People tend to give more respect to heavy and dark music just as they do to movies but I’d ask you why can’t fun bright songs and films win awards?
Guy - Piece Of My Love
I’ve been in love with New Jack Swing since the mid 90s. So when I worked with Teddy Riley on this song called “f(x) - All Night” it was a dream come true. The man himself of New Jack Swing, Mr. Teddy Riley. Any producer’s dream is to establish one’s musical genre, style and signature pieces so to speak. Like, a drum pattern, sample or a tagline or anything that makes people go “Oh that is JINBO!” In this regard, I put Teddy as one of the handful of kings of producers. With this love for the genre, I tried to give a creative twist on my song “Love Bomb” by slowing it down to half-time. I’ve used the signature chord progression, the drum patterns but the bpm. And once I did that I knew I wanted to mix it with Jersey Club and Miami Bass.
Ras Fowlie - Mother Mushet
Spending holidays in Bali gave me some creative juice. Namely Reggae music gave me that.
Everywhere I went they were playing Reggae. I love reggae but this was the first time that I
actively made a playlist and lived with it. I had made some Reggae tracks before so one day I
played those tracks while I was in Bali and surprisingly, they did not have that tropical vibe
enough. So I decided to make a new one after the trip. “Lychee Lime Juice” was made with this inspiration. I want to deliver this happy, relaxed vibe to my South Korean people who are
dealing with the high pressure of daily survival and competition. Aren’t we born to celebrate
life? Aren’t we born to be celebrated? Regardless of the price, the size of whatever things. Yes, that's my point.
Michael Jackson - Heal The World
There was a time when singers, artists were the people who tried to uplift the world. They were the messengers of the light, they would light up our spirits to encourage us to become a better human being. Today I feel like it’s missing and I long for those messengers. So I decided to write a song that has a taste of those big stars’ music. The Quincy Jones’, the Michael Jacksons’ the Stevie Wonders’. Chae, a marine, died during an excessive operation, and no one took responsibility. There was no significant public outcry to find those accountable. Feeling frustrated and responsible, I wrote a song called “Let Us Rise Again”. In the need for us to have more empathy. A sense of community, justice, and love.
