We sat down with new band John Condit & The Comedown on the release of their debut single 'Shooting Star', to chat about what goes into making their unique sound. Be sure to check out the new video at the bottom, and follow them on their journey to the stars!

Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine

The first track on the first album is almost one of the most important songs in any band's career. It’s the statement of “this is who we are.” Astronomy Domine is easily one of the most epic and psychedelic songs to be released during the 1960s. Many of my friends have heard me rant on and on about how at the same time The Beatles made Sgt. Pepper’s, just down the hall in Abby Road Studios was Pink Floyd using these recording techniques and flipping them on their head in the wee hours of the night. Astronomy Domine is a wonderful example of the raw energy Syd Barrett and crew were unleashing in the dance clubs at the time. It will forever live in my brain as one of the greatest pieces of psychedelic music ever created.

CAN - Sing Swan Song

I’ve given it a lot of thought, and this would be my desert island song. It’s beautiful, intricate, hypnotic, heavy in its own way, and checks all of the boxes. I am a huge CAN nerd, and this song feels like a pinnacle of what they were working towards at these times. It’s always so wild to me to think about how all of CAN’s songs during this time are a combination of tape edits that came from hours of jamming. It never gets old.

Incubus - 11 a.m.

I think somewhere in my subconscious this song is what has inspired my live guitar sound. Mike Einziger was one of the first modern guitarists I was enamored with as a kid, and the tone and layers of this song is just perfect in my opinion. I’m also a huge sucker for a good story song, and have always loved the imagery in this song. I can always get transported to where this song takes me.

Tom Petty & The Heart Breakers - Even The Losers

I always love how Tom Petty was constantly rooting for the underdog. As I said earlier, I’m a huge sucker for a story song, and this is right up there. Who wouldn’t want to sit on the roof smoking cigarettes and stare at the moon with Tom Petty? Tom is one of my favorite songwriters in the world, and Even the Losers is just one of those songs that always gives me hope.

Kikagaku Moyo - Tree Smoke

You know when people say, “I was born in the wrong generation?” I always tell folks that I was lucky enough to be alive while Kikagaku Moyo existed. Having seen Kikagaku’s first show in the U.S., to actually befriending them over the years, this band has a certain spirituality around them. I always loved how they could take in different environments, and come out with albums that were products of their surroundings at that time. Tree Smoke is a fantastic example of a band who was just getting started, and could take you on a sonic journey through the cosmos.
