5 Songs I Love w/ jon scott

Every artist has a handful of songs that have stayed with them, whether they sparked an idea, shaped their taste or simply became part of the soundtrack to everyday life. For jon scott, those influences span the music that has inspired him and helped shape the artist he is today.
For this edition of 5 Songs I Love, scott catches up with Flex to talk through 5 tracks that hold a special place for him. Along the way, he digs into what draws him to each song, the artists and sounds that have influenced his own work, and the moments that have made these particular tracks memorable to him.
From personal favourites to songs that have left a lasting impression, these 5 picks offer a closer look at the music behind jon scott and the influences that continue to inspire him.
Marvin Gaye – "Let's Get It On"
This is classic seductive Marvin at his most tender and yet growlingly seductive.
The lyrics and groove just sit so well. Heady intoxicating vocals. So much cooing and cajoling and just pure outpouring of a lot of mixed signals wrapped up in Love.
He starts off with a confession “I’ve been really trying baby, trying to hold back this feeling for so long…”, then comes “I won’t push you baby” then in the next breath “C’mon c’mon darling stop beating around the bush…”
And my favourite line “We’re all sensitive people with so much to give, since we got to be here, let’s live… Let’s get it on”
Bee Gees – "How Deep Is Your Love"
Straight off from the mellow intro the lush vocals and the dreamy Rhodes, you know you are in for a masterpiece of mellow melodic heart tugging and unforgettable piece of magic.
The Lyrics are pure poetry and all imagery…
“I know your eyes in the mornin’ sun/ I feel you touch me in the pouring rain…” “I believe in you, you know the door to my very soul”
Wonderful poetry and imagery… Simply stunning.
Minnie Riperton – "Lovin' You"
An ageless timeless gorgeous love song. Stopped me dead in my tracks when I first heard it and always makes me tingle even now. “No one else can make me feel the colours that you bring”…
Her amazing vocal range /octaves and the beautiful simple arrangements all come together so divinely. Just magnificent.
Commodores – "Still"
This is a mature reflective love song. Achingly beautiful.
Speaks to those experiences we wish we could go back and fix, when a great love has gone and we wonder where did we/it go wrong. Mr. Richie sings it so effortlessly, no drama, just straight up.
“We played the games that people play… We lost what we had found… Somehow I know deep in my heart, you needed me, cause I needed you, so desperately…, we were too blind to see… BUT THEN MOST OF ALL, I DO LOVE YOU… STILL.” The pain and longing is all there…
Donald Fagen – "Walk Between Raindrops"
A wonderfully crafted happy love song/story about a couple in Miami.
“A shadow crossed The Blue Miami Sky as we watched the regulars rush the big hotels”.
They have a row, as we all do in our relationships, made up and walked back together in the rain being so loved up, they did not notice the rain and walked between the raindrops…
“We fought, now I can’t remember why, after all the words were said and tears were gone, we vowed we’d never say goodbye, when we kissed we could hear the sound of thunder…” “You opened your umbrella, but we walked between the raindrops back to your door”.
