We sat down with Lenox Hills after the release of their stellar new EP 'Staring At The Sun', to discuss what influences shaped their unique sound. Be sure to check out the single at the bottom and follow them on socials!
Coldplay – Clocks
I know what you’re thinking. “Coldplay?”. I know they’re not always the cool
answer, but A Rush of Blood to the Head is one of the best albums ever in my
opinion. There are so many great songs on the record, but ‘Clocks’ in
particular sticks out to me. I rarely quote YouTube comments, but I saw
someone describe it as something along the lines of “feeling like it has always
existed… it feels like time itself.” I’m not 100% sure what that means
necessarily, but I know it describes how I feel towards this song. No matter
how many times I hear it, I always feel hopeful after listening. It truly is one
of the most beautiful and epic pieces of music I’ve ever heard, and it still
holds up after 22 years.
Radiohead - All I Need
I remember hearing this song for the first time in high school and being
blown away. I had never really listened to Radiohead other than their biggest
songs (‘Creep’, ‘High and Dry’), but this was the song that really got me to dig
into them. At the time, I was learning to play bass, and the bassline in this
song really struck me. It was one of the first songs I had heard where the
bass truly carried it. Between that and Thom York’s vocals, I was hooked on
the song immediately. It was instrumental in getting me started in my
songwriting journey and it’s still one of my favorite songs to this day.
Bob Dylan - Girl from the North Country
This one is a song I remember listening to with my dad in the car. He’s a huge
Bob Dylan fan and whenever I rode with him, we’d usually only listen to Bob
Dylan CD’s, Bruce Springsteen CD’s, or sports talk radio. This is my favorite
song from my favorite album by Dylan. It’s just so heartbreaking yet so
beautiful at the same time. You can’t help but feel a strong sense of
melancholy when listening. Even as a kid, I always felt it was an extremely
profound song that makes you want to cry in the best way.
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
I first heard this song as a freshman in college about 8 years ago. I was trying
to broaden my music horizon and kept hearing about Nick Drake whenever I
watched interviews of my favorite artists talking about who their biggest
influences were. I decided to check him out and was blown away. Something
about his music is just so soothing and relatable. I’ve gotten through a lot of
tough moments in my life listening to Nick Drake songs, this song chief
among them. It’s also the first vinyl record I ever bought, so this song holds a
lot of sentimental value to me.
Arctic Monkeys - Four Out of Five
I believe this is the most slept on Arctic Monkeys song out there. I genuinely
think it’s a masterpiece. I started really writing songs in 2018, right around
when they released their album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, so I was
very interested to see what the record was going to be like from a song-
writing stance. While the album itself is not my favorite of theirs, this song is.
The song is essentially about a hotel on the moon with a rooftop taqueria,
which I think is hilarious. While I appreciate Alex Turner’s clever lyricism and
wit, it’s the sexy guitar riff, eccentric vocal delivery, and epic slow building
crescendo that get me signing along every time I play it. It also has one of the
best music videos I’ve ever seen which
