Following the release of his latest single 'La Petite Mort' featuring Leoné Murphy, we caught up with Dubai-based producer Myrillion, to find out more about what inspires his eclectic sound. If you enjoy Myrillion's picks be sure to check out 'La Petite Mort' at the end of the article.
1. Alina Baraz & Galimatias - Urban Flora
"I think this has to be one of the best produced electronic records I’ve heard. It’s one of my go-to songs if I’m testing a set of speakers. Galimatias is an incredible producer - his contrast between the lows and highs in the frequency spectrum are such a sensory experience. This song stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it and I’ve been admiring it and picking it apart ever since."
2. Portishead - Roads
"I couldn’t not include a Portishead record. There are too many to choose from, but the one that still knocks me sideways is Roads. It’s a masterclass in minimalism - achieves so much with so little. And such a perfectly orchestrated build to the end - the way the bass drops in the final section gives me chills every time. Was a massive influence on how I like to structure tracks."
3. Bonobo - Eyesdown Feat. Andreya Triana
"This whole record has been on a solid rotation for me since the week it came out. As a guitarist who likes to collect different fretted instruments from around the world, it was inspiring for me to hear somebody incorporating different ethnic elements with those downtempo beats. It opened up a whole new sonic world for me to combine world/jazz/fusion influences I grew up with into electronica in a way that felt so smooth and organic."
4. DJ Shadow - In / Flux
"Nobody does samples like DJ Shadow. This record is such a journey. I’ve yet to find a beat that goes as hard as the main break in this track. As a producer he has such an instinct for how long to hang out on an idea to give the listener time to sink in and enjoy it, but not so long it becomes stale. I never get bored of this record, and it always makes me want to go crate digging for rare grooves and samples."
5. Tanerélle - Love from NGC 7318
"This is Leoné’s pick. I hadn’t heard of Tanerélle but was instantly hooked on this track after she showed it to me. It was earlier in our collaboration and was a perfect encapsulation of what I wanted to achieve with Myrillion - that sensuous, ASMR experience. Underwater lows and ear candy highs. Pure vibes from start to finish."
