Didn't We Almost Have It All - Whitney Houston
Growing up, this beautiful classic was and still is one of my all time favourite songs and one of those that inspired me into becoming a love song writer. The idea of speaking to someone you love was an inspiration, in fact the word 'we' was used over 18 times in that song.
Hello - Lionel Richie
Almost every young boy growing up, I presume, has at some point day dreamed the lines that Lionel Richie put out in this song, even if they never said it out to that one girl they liked in high school lol. Well this was one of those songs with masterful lyrical, melody and track presentation. It's one of those songs I would sing in front of a bathroom mirror with a comb in hand as a mic while enjoying the sounds of the bathroom reverb lol.
3 Way Phone Call - R. Kelly
This song is a masterpiece to me, from the conversation concept of the lyrics to the cool RnB vibes of the track and it's melody. I mean this song is one of the best music dialogue songs out there. It's one of those songs that made me realise that there are no rules or uncrossable boundaries when it comes to the art of song writing. The lyrics itself, it's so inspiring, I mean with it's concept being that of a gospel song actually does inspire you as a gospel song is meant to. But then it's not your regular gospel song, it's actually a fusion of RnB and gospel, again making you see that there are no boundaries when it comes to making music.
Hello - Adele
So from my list so far I think one common thing is my love for one to one communication love songs. But in this song Adele wasn't speaking to just one person but expressing herself to different person or groups in each line. Like in one line she'd be talking to her late granddad while talking to an ex in another line. It's one of her greatest vocal masterpiece with great energy. But through this song I could see the possibility of representing different thoughts in every line of a lyrical piece yet being able to make it seem like a one directional whole.
I Look To You - Whitney Houston
This song is so inspiring. It was one of the last songs by Whitney before she passed away and one of her come back songs as she recovered from drugs. Maybe it's because she's my music heroine and seeing her picking up herself in that song made it an emotional one for me. But also, the hope that the song exudes especially her hope on God was remarkable. It made feel like anything can be expressed through music.
