Following the release of his latest 8-track album 'Soundtrack Without A Movie', Flex caught up with Spanish artist Pshycotic Beats. Known for fusing various genres, including pop, electronica and orchestral arrangements into his music, we found out which artists influence him the most. If you enjoy Pshycotic Beats picks, be sure to check out 'Soundtrack Without A Movie' at the end of the article.
1. BJORK - Pluto
We live in a time when everything is considered a masterpiece. This is, of course, absurd and meaningless. A masterpiece is a work that serves to teach musicians how to make music; it is something that is studied to learn what greatness is. Bkork's Homogenic is a clear example. I'm going to go for one of her lesser-known songs: Pluto. It's an amalgam of experimentation and madness. A precursor to PC music, distortions, twisted machines of bits and beats. A marvel.
2. MELBA MOORE - The Magic TouchÂ
One of the most fascinating episodes in music history is the story of the explosion of Northern Soul music in the 1970s. An English DJ found a giant box of underground soul recordings in a record warehouse, bought it, and flew it back to England. 4.000 titles. One of them was this one, The Magic Touch, recorded by Melba Moore in 1966. The song was forgotten for 20 years until it was discovered in the mid-1980s and began to be played at Northern Soul parties at the Wigan Casino. I LOVE IT!!!!!
3. FARMER IN THE CITY-Scott WalkerÂ
Scott Walker is THE VOICE. If you listen to the albums he recorded in the 60s, you'll start to doubt that Frank Sinatra sang better. He's one of the most honest artists the world has ever known. Farmer in the City is cinematic, terrifying, captivating, and unique. Taken from his album Tilt, I recommend studying him and watching his documentary 30th Century Man to delve into his universe.
PORTISHEAD - The RipÂ
Portishead are my heroes. Their third album is what I consider proper music. The Rip is genius. The idea of transitioning from acoustic guitar arpeggios to krautrock electronics is brilliant. The use of a tinny drum sound is so original. The Rip is one of the most beautiful pieces of music in the history of music.
SILVER APPLES - Lovefingers
Silver Apples was a duo from New York City, formed in 1967. They are considered pioneers in blending electronic sounds with rock / psychedelic music. Their setup included homemade oscillators, filters, pedals, even scavenged electronics. Their first album it’s experimental yet easy listening. It sounds weird yet interesting, A jewel from the sixties one of the most early manifestation of electronica way before Kraftwerk emerged. I totally recommend this band. I love this song, it’s inspiring, it gives me fuel to tray to experiment and have fun with my music.
