Following the release of his latest single “Still Goin’”, Flex caught up with New Jersey singer-songwriter Steven Lemonto explore the influences behind his heartfelt blend of indie pop, rock and folk. If you enjoy Steven’s picks, be sure to check out “Still Goin’” at the end of the article.
The Luckiest - Ben Folds
I was a huge fan of Ben Folds Five when they were putting out records. Ben released his first solo album and this was the closing track. It’s one of the greatest love songs ever. It’s just sweet, simple, and free of cliche. Just lovely.
Must Be Something Wrong With Her - Ron Sexsmith
Ron Sexsmith is probably my favorite songwriter ever, all-time. Most definitely the biggest musical hero for me. I had the extraordinary opportunity to spend a little time with him and some of his friends poolside in Owen Sound, Ontario last year. The highlight for me was when he took an acoustic guitar and played me a few unreleased tracks from his upcoming record “Hangover Terrace” and this was one of them. I was blown away the first time I heard it, and I still get those same feelings. Epic love song, and purely authentic.
Surf’s Up - The Beach Boys
There is no doubt that the Beach boys have been an influence for most songwriters. For me, I see it mostly in some background harmonies that I do and not necessarily my melodies, but Brian Wilson… ridiculous. It would be hard for me to pick my favorite song, but “Surf’s Up” is nothing short of a masterpiece. It was originally supposed to be released on the “SMiLE” record, but was released a few years later. Amazing tune.
Bend and Break - Keane
I’ll never forget I was getting ready to go on stage in 2004 or 2005 and this song was playing over the PA in the venue. I didn’t know what it was, didn’t recognize the singer, but even throughout my set all I could think about was this song. I was on a national tour and I remember listening to it over and over while on the road. This is one of those songs that I can listen to 10 times in a row and be excited about the 11th. Amazing arrangement, great production, and killer vocals.
The Lucky One - Alison Krauss & Union Station
I loved Alison Krauss so much when I was in high school. I was hoping we were going to get married! I love everything about this song. Her voice, the arrangement, the lyrics, the spirit… everything. I always felt like it was sort of a little personal anthem for me. I haven’t seen Alison Krauss and her band in so many years, but I’m hoping I get to catch them in concert soon.
