Following the release of his latest single 'I Ain't Lyin'!', Flex caught up with musician and illustrator Sugs to discover what influences his sound. If you enjoy Sugs' picks, be sure to check out 'I Ain't Lyin'!' at the end of the article.
SK8 Head - City Morgue
Both blunt and sharp. Changed my perspective on music when I found out you could bend genres like this. There are no rules in expression, just get the point across.
Afterlife - Avenged Sevenfold
One of my favorites as a kid. The way it throws you back and forth between fear and panic. But the small beams of light in the melody keep you hopeful. The way each section plays out is cinematic.
Maniac - Kid Cudi
This was the song I used for my alarm clock in high school. I remember being woken up by this at 5 AM for my zero period. Would still be dark outside. Probably the quietest part of the day. Song is a mania, it’s lonely, yet empowering.
Want You Gone - Portal 2 Soundtrack
The vocoder is ridiculous. I know it’s based off of the game’s plot but the lyrics out of context are still so vivid and interpretable. You can imagine who the singer is talking to, everybody knows someone. Reads like a poem.
Out Of Touch - Hall & Oates
This is one i’ve been playing more recently, I’m late. But when I feel lost this song reminds me that the feeling is fleeting. It’s okay to be out of touch. It implies that you have been, and are probably still capable of being, in touch haha. Does that make sense.
