5 Songs I Love w/ T!LT

Alice Smith

Following the release of their latest EP 'Death Do Us Part', we caught up with US indie-punk band T!LT to find out more about what goes into their eclectic sound. If you enjoy T!LT's picks be sure to check out 'Death Do Us Part' at the end of the article.

1. Death Grips- I’ve Seen Footage

"This is a song we always play on our way to shows to hype ourselves up. We are a big fan of Death Grips and really connect with their ethos. In an age where you’re constantly bombarded with scarring clips online. “I’ve Seen Footage” is what keeps us going."

2. Connor - The Koreatown Oddity - Little Dominiques Nosebleed Pt. 1

"In this song, the artist explains he was in two car accidents at a young age that would affect his physical health into his adulthood. This song made me think about my own physical health and my own past. I was in a major car accident when I was four or five, another car t-boned us and it impacted the right side of our car where my booster-seat was. Some years into my adulthood, I’m experiencing problems with the right side of my jaw, shoulder, and hip, which may or may not have a connection to the crash. The song is also just a lot of fun to listen to. It’s got a cool beat switch and the bars are tongue-in-cheek but still really creative."

3. Hayden - 国道スロープ

"I’m not going to lie, I don’t know a single word of this song / this entire album. With the entire record in Japanese (a language I do not speak), I don’t know the slightest clue of what they’re talking about. With that being said, the emotions portrayed on this album are so visceral I feel as though I completely understand it. It goes beyond the language barrier and perfectly encapsulates the emotions they’re clearly trying to portray and for that, I love it."

4. Luca - The Beatles - I’m Only Sleeping

"Easily my favorite Beatles song right now. Absolutely nails the sonic atmosphere of a groggy and spaced out bed-ridden episode. Lyrically minimal yet extremely thematically focused which invokes my own personal issues with sleep/depression. The song itself is so upfront in the mix that each swell of harmony or backwards guitar interjection pulls you deeper and deeper into its hazy depths. A 10 piece puzzle and a 1000 piece puzzle can still display the same image. This song for me represents how the finesse of a simple arrangement can be just as compelling as a sonically sophisticated piece."

5. Mike -  Elliot Smith- Everything Reminds Me Of Her

"For me, this (Elliot Smith) song encapsulates everything about being a great artist and songwriter. Detailing the bringing up of memories from a past relationship, Smith uses a simple, yet melancholic melody and chords to emphasize the bittersweet haze of recalling a more cheerful time, only then to be woken up to the fact that this person is no longer around him. With haunting vocals, the first line “I never really had a problem because of leaving,” shows Elliots Smith’s precise wordplay. Meaning both he has never had an issue with someone leaving him, and also how he “fixes” problems by removing himself and being avoidant. With only eleven lines, Smith conveys such a deep and complicated message that it needs to be relistened to multiple times to find every detail. The multiple guitar lines are soft yet poignant, and the effortless playing sounds deceivingly easy. I encourage anyone to sit down one night with some tea in a dim room and give this a listen, see what memories it brings up for you."
