Following the release of her debut single 'Bummer', Flex caught up with British pop artist Yasmin to find out about what influences her sound, which she describes as 'sad girl pop with soft rebellion.' If you enjoy Yasmin's picks be sure to check out 'Bummer' at the end of the article.
1. Time After Time – Cyndi Lauper
This song instantly takes me back to the early 2000s and gives me that nostalgic, summer-road-trip feeling. It’s timeless, full of good energy and good vibes. Cyndi Lauper’s voice has such a classic tone that makes the track feel warm and familiar, which is exactly the type of emotional connection I wanted to create with Bummer.
2. Body Dysmorphia – RAYE
I really admire how this song paints an honest and raw picture of what so many girls go through. RAYE’s sound is unique and full of emotion, which inspired me to bring that same level of vulnerability into Bummer. I love how it’s both emotionally heavy yet still has a light, summery feel, and I wanted to capture that same duality.
3. Empire State of Mind – Jay-Z & Alicia Keys
I’ve always loved how this track instantly transports you to New York. My own music video for Bummer was filmed there, which made this song an even bigger influence—it showed me how a song can be tied to a specific place in people’s minds. I wanted Bummer to have that same transporting effect, instantly taking listeners to the feeling of summer.
4. London Bridge – Fergie
This song inspired me because of its bold pop energy and standout drum elements. I love how the drums are such a driving force in the track, and that inspired me to incorporate strong, rhythmic drums into Bummer to give it an unforgettable pulse.
5. Lovely – Khalid & Billie Eilish
I’ve always been drawn to the way their voices blend so beautifully together, it feels almost cinematic. This inspired me to include a male vocal in Bummer, because I think the art of duets has such an emotional pull and deserves a revival. The interplay of two voices can make a song feel even more layered and moving.
