Last month, Fen Doi released his debut album New Horizon, a nine song exploration of indie and electronica. The title track delighted new and old listeners alike, with its atmospheric ambiance and heavy retrowave influence. The project is run by producer and musician Neil Lauper, who is based out of Zurich, Switzerland, and he finds innovative ways to introduce synthpop to the modern masses.
We sat down with Lauper to discuss his biggest inspirations and what tracks he has in his own rotation!
1."Ellipsis" - Drab Majesty
"This song hits the sweet-spot between melancholy and joy. It's danceable and uplifting, yet there is an unmistakable melancholy underpinning the mood. The guitar work is amazing and inspired me to use a nostalgic sounding "chorusy" synth guitar as lead instrument in many of my tracks."
2. "Make It Happen" - RÜFÜS DU SOL
"Rüfüs Du Sol manages to capture just the right amount of cliché and pop whilst maintaining a sincere core message. They offer an epic and interesting sound design. Their music somehow always hit deep with me."
3. "This World Couldn't See Us" - Nabihah Iqbal
"Lyrically to me this song is a masterpiece. It feels like a poem capturing the bittersweet essence of love and life."
4. "In Your Arms" - DJ HEARTSTRING
"DJ HEARTSTRING single-handedly rekindled my love for electronic dance music a few years ago. High-speed, high-energy, uplifting and soothing electronic dance music you can't sit still to. "
5. "Something Comforting" - Porter Robinson
"Lyrically, porter Robinsons' album Nurture was a huge inspiration to me. The album captures a deep longing for transformation, growth and overcoming mental suffering. It is deeply encouraging and soothing, despite it's powerful and big sound."
"New Horizon" is available across streaming platforms.
