Following the release of his latest single 'Do It Again?', Flex caught up with British artist and actor Jason Patel to discover what influences his unique, textured alternative-R&B sound. If you enjoy Jason's picks, be sure to check out 'Do It Again?' at the end of the article.
1. Grave - Summer Walker
This song was my introduction to Summer Walker when I stumbled across the Clear (Live) EP that was filmed in a treehouse. Wow. The groove of this song immediately pulled me in. There’s an understated confidence in the melody and the lyrics that feels effortless. It’s unapologetically sexy and full of attitude. That moment made me want to dive deeper into her creativity and discover everything she was making. I honestly wish more of her music leaned back into this sound it feels rooted in realness. You can hear the real instruments, and there’s an authenticity to it that I personally gravitate towards more than the more commercial records in her catalogue.
2. Haha, I’m dying alone - Bexx
I’m very lucky to know Bexx personally, and I’m completely obsessed with her writing. Her melodies and lyrics are so smart. When I listen to her music I feel empowered like she’s telling stories that are brutally honest but somehow still uplifting. Her voice in this song gets me every single time. The composition is just everything. And the chorus? “Ha ha ha, I’m dying alone.” Every time it hits, I go absolutely wild. I will forever be a die-hard Bexx fan.
3. How Many Years - Yebba
I cry to this song. A lot. There’s something about the emotional journey it takes you on the dynamics in Yebba’s voice, the vulnerability in the lyrics, and the way the song builds and shifts. You can’t help but feel the grief, the loss, the heartache. Even when I perform this song myself it hits me in the chest. It’s a testament to Yebba’s artistry taking something deeply personal and transforming it into music that’s so powerful and magnetic.
4. Going - H.E.R
The simplicity of this song is what makes it so beautiful. The production is minimal and intimate, like you’re being invited quietly into H.E.R.’s world. Everything feels so elegant and intentional. When I listen to it, I imagine a winding river constantly moving but never rigid. The softness of the vocals and the emotional drive of the lyrics are just perfect. It’s one of those songs I constantly return to. It lives completely rent-free in my mind.
5. Love of my life - Queen
This song has been with me for most of my musical journey. I used to sing it as a kid, and I still sing it now. It’s raw, heartbreaking, and deeply emotional a love letter and a cry for someone all at once. Yet it’s also completely anthemic. For me, it’s one of the greatest songs ever written. Even thinking about it while writing this makes me emotional. Some songs are just beyond explanation.
