Following the release of her latest album RESET, Flex caught up with Dutch producer, songwriter, and vocalist Lilian Hak to find out what influences her eclectic sound. If you enjoy Lilian's picks, be sure to check out RESET at the end of the article.

1. “Everything in Its Right Place” – Radiohead

The opening track of Radiohead’s brilliant album Kid A has always deeply intrigued me. I love the hypnotic Prophet-5 analog synth chords that loop throughout the song—they pull me in completely. The overall sound is so warm, striking a perfect balance between the experimental and the minimal. The abstract, heavily processed vocals at the beginning feel calming rather than chaotic. I heard the song in a scene in the film Vanilla Sky, and it fits so perfectly. I’ll never forget it.

For me, this track is a timeless example of experimental sound done exactly right.

2. “Teardrop” – Massive Attack

I remember so clearly the first time I heard this song—it hit me instantly. Teardrop is hypnotic. Elizabeth Fraser’s incredibly distinctive voice (from Cocteau Twins) carries so much emotion, and that iconic drum groove is unforgettable. The piano motif is simple but powerful, and the whole track creates a mood that stays with you. It’s one of those songs that just never loses its impact.

3. “Video Games” – Lana Del Rey

When I first heard Video Games, I knew right away it would be a hit. The lyrics are so original—very much Lana Del Rey’s signature style. It’s a beautiful, nostalgic song with a unique atmosphere. I also really love the video; I read she made it herself, which adds to its charm. It’s just a truly great track that still holds up today.

4. “California Soul” – Marlena Shaw

Marlena Shaw is a fantastic singer with such a strong, powerful voice. California Soul is one of those songs that just makes me feel good, genuinely happy. I love the arrangement with a rich horn and string section that adds so much warmt hand groove. It has a great vibe—gorgeous backing vocals, a unique character, and that classic soul energy with real personality.

5. “Piano Joint (This Kind of Love)” – Michael Kiwanuka

Oh my god—what a voice. There’s so much soul in it. Michael Kiwanuka sounds like a modern blend of Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Piano Joint has clear ‘70s influences, but it still feels fresh and contemporary. The build-up is so well done, the backing vocals are rich, and that beautiful melody line..Honestly the whole track really moves me.
