We sat down with noah elliott after the release of their stellar new tune 'Waiting For Something', to discuss what influences shaped their unique sound. Be sure to check out the single at the bottom and follow them on socials!
Between The Bars - Elliott Smith
This song makes my most-listened list every single year. I discovered Elliott Smith when I was around 18 I think, and Between The Bars was the first song I heard. I fell in love immediately. The personification in the lyrics is absolutely beautiful, it has inspired me ever since. My song Anna was heavily inspired by Between the Bars lyrically.
Before The Line - dodie
I went through my teenage years when YouTube was a big thing. I somehow stumbled on this youtuber with a ukulele, writing songs about their life: dodie. I was quite a sad teenager, and I found so much comfort in dodie’s work. Listening to their songs, I was not completely alone anymore, I was together-alone with all the other people listening to her work and relating to it. That was so incredibly special to me. Before The Line was not out then, but it is my favorite dodie song at the moment. It’s been beautiful to see them grow and develop as an artist.
Savior Complex - Phoebe Bridgers
I’ve written a 5 page essay about this song for class once, that is how much I love it. The way Phoebe Bridgers uses imagery in her lyrics inspires me whenever I hear it. She combines the most heartbreaking lines with the most uplifting chord in the song (just as Elliot Smith would do), and it leaves me speechless every time. This is definitely one of my go to crying songs.
Little Green - Joni Mitchell
I can’t talk about crying songs without mentioning one of the most beautiful songs ever written: Little Green. I came to Joni Mitchell quite late- I was spending the evening with a friend of mine, who introduced me to this song. We sat in the dark together, and listened, and cried- I have loved Joni Mitchell ever since.
Letter to an Old Poet - boygenius
I was on a train the first time I heard this song, the album had just come out and I had to listen to it. When I realized it was a reprise of Me and My Dog, I was so incredibly moved. (That song was on repeat for me back in 2018) The way the lyrics had been rewritten, years later, the ode to the original song, the growth, the hope, but also the pain; I do not have the words. I would love to engage with my older work like that one day.
