We sat down with the incredible Oriana Gidi upon the release of her new single 'Frozen Spiderwebs' to find out more about what influences her unique sound. Be sure to check out the new track at the bottom and follow her along her journey on socials!
Eco - El David Aguilar
To me, this song is a masterclass in experimental songwriting. It opened up my mind to the
endless possibilities of what songwriting can be, and it felt freeing and exciting. “Eco” defies
rules and expectations in so many ways- structurally, harmonically, and conceptually. It’s
completely original, and fully commits to the universe it allows us to inhabit for a few
minutes. The lyrics are pure poetry, in my opinion. You do have to speak Spanish to
understand just how genius it is, but the beautifully hypnotic melody and deeply entrancing
production makes it so that anyone could fall in love with this song, whether they speak
Spanish or not.
Hotwax- Beck
I think this song is crazy cool. My friend showed it to me in our high school days and the
obsession has only grown. It never goes where you think it’s gonna go, and it’s an incredibly
fun ride. The song is so trippy, and has so many layers to it that I could never get bored of it.
My friend and I said that one day we’re going to listen to Hotwax on repeat, as many times
as it takes, “until something happens”. What will that be? Who knows. But after listening to
this song 20+ times, something’s bound to happen.
To Let a Good Thing Die - Bruno Major
This is possibly the saddest song ever written. And I love it so much. Masochism? Perhaps.
It once played randomly in a moment where it felt so accurate and specific, that it felt like a
targeted attack from the universe. But I keep coming back to it because it has a softness,
vulnerability and beauty that’s special. It feels deeply human. And especially these days,
that’s something I treasure.
Symphonique #6 - Moondog
This song was my introduction to Moondog, and it blew my mind. Especially knowing it was
written in the 60’s. My experience of listening to this song for the first time was almost
transcendental. It’s a very complex piece, but also highly... singable. The main theme is so
melodic and memorable, and the percussion grounds it in a way that lets you fully immerse
yourself in the song, even when it gets quite chaotic. The piece is in 17-part counterpoint
and at some point you just don’t know what’s going on, but you don’t need to, you’re just
happy to be there and let yourself be pulled into the beautiful chaos.
Make Me Feel - Janelle Monae
I wanted this list to have range, so I’m including Make Me Feel. This is my favorite pop song
of all time. And probably my favorite production (and mix) of all time. The way every element
is introduced and layered, the way things build up and how everything takes up just the right
amount of space. It’s the musical equivalent of puzzle pieces magically falling into place. It’s
just perfect in every way, and it always puts me in a great mood.
