5 Songs I Love w/ Sarcoline

Kenny Sandberg

We sat down with Sarcoline after the release of their stellar new tune 'Mountain Blue', to discuss what influences shaped their unique sound. Be sure to check out the single at the bottom and follow them on socials!

Longview - Green Day

Green Day was one of my first loves growing up and Dookie was one of my first tastes of music and I was absolutely obsessed with it. I remember being in the car listening to Longview and it making me feel a certain way, I’d say that was one of my first experiences of realising my love for music. The bassline and calm verses along with lyrics that just had me hooked instantly, then the storming, explosive chorus that follows, full of attitude and expressed a type of anger you might feel growing up. I try to implement a similar attitude into my music when I write and I believe that Green Day had a massive part to play in me picking up a guitar and singing for the first time. I used to dress like Billie Joe and play Green Day songs in my schools talent shows, I was a cool kid.

The Headmasters Ritual - The Smiths

Johnny Marr will always be one of my favourite guitarists and the chords and riffs in this are what make it my favourite Smiths record. Morriseys lyrics and voice are complementary to the music. It also gives me a memory of sneaking into Johnny Marr's soundcheck when I was around 14, it is safe to say I may have overstayed my welcome in that moment.

Trani - Kings of Leon

I had to put a Kings of Leon track in this list. I genuinely couldn’t decide as I can listen to basically all their albums back to front without skipping a single tune. This one just stands out to me as I remember my dad sticking it on as a kid and I love songs that build into just a big release at the end, it’s proper dirty rock n roll how it should be done, and Caleb’s screaming in tongue at the end is just the cherry on top. I take a lot from this band in my own writing and vocal execution. I think Bob Dylan watched them before they blew up and he said that this one was ‘that’s a hell of a song’, which is pretty damn cool in itself.

Cocoon - Catfish and the Bottlemen

Catfish and the Bottlemen are one of my favourite bands of all time, they had a big impact on me in terms of where I wanted to take myself musically. Before them I was just happy doing my own thing but they made me want to form my own band and write some real rock n roll. This song was on Fifa 15 and I was listening to them just before that came out, so when I heard it on there I was absolutely buzzing. I even had the opportunity to soundcheck with Catfish in Southampton. I managed to get myself into the soundcheck (with approval this time), and Van invited me on stage to play this song, it was one of the best days of my life to this day. Great explosive, yet easy listening song and will stick with me forever.

You’ve Got The Nerve - Bad Nerves

I thought I’d include one that I really like currently to the list. Bad Nerves are probably my favourite current band, these boys are seriously good. I love the energy, the lyricism, the music itself, and I find myself listening to all of their music most days at the moment. They have really inspired me to add a bit more grit to our stuff. This song in particular is really cool, the musicianship and how they work different bits in with each other, like where the bass kicks in on its own in the first verse or the cowbell comes in to play in parts, they are really talented songwriters
