Alexander Nantschev makes a lifetime of musical contrasts feel thrillingly alive on new album ‘Half A Century’

Few records arrive with as much history behind them as 'Half A Century', yet Alexander Nantschev’s latest album never feels weighed down by the past.

Instead, the Vienna-born violinist, singer, composer and producer turns decades of wildly different musical experiences into something vibrant, adventurous and unmistakably personal. Across eleven tracks, classical discipline, psychedelic colour, progressive ambition, electronics, improvisation and Balkan inflections are allowed to collide freely, creating a record that feels expansive without becoming unfocused.

His musical life has always existed between very different worlds. His childhood was shaped equally by the formal traditions introduced by his violinist father and the more experimental possibilities coming from his brother’s studio, where synths, samplers and tape machines offered an entirely different kind of education. And you can certainly hear the impact of both throughout 'Half A Century'.

What makes the album particularly exciting is that he never seems interested in forcing those influences into a neat compromise. Formal structure can suddenly open into something freer and more psychedelic; electronic textures can rub against acoustic detail; and compositional precision can give way to instinct.

As the final chapter in the trilogy that began with 'Selves' and continued through 'Your Star Smells Like Mine', 'Half A Century' also carries a satisfying sense of culmination. But rather than sounding like a career summary tied to Alexander’s 50th year, the record feels curiously forward-facing. Its emotional weight comes from experience, but its energy comes from curiosity.
