Blank Instrument finds a place to breathe on her tender new single ‘Green and Blue’

Grief can make the world feel unnaturally loud, and on ‘Green and Blue’, Blank Instrument steps away from that noise and looks for somewhere quieter to stand.

As the second single from Kim Franklin’s forthcoming debut album 'Jumping at Ghosts', the song was written during a visit to Byron Bay in the months after the death of her close friend Julie. That context gives the track a deep emotional weight, but she doesn't allow it to become overwhelmed by sorrow. ‘Green and Blue’ is about the need to pause, to leave the city behind for a while, and to rediscover a sense of steadiness through landscape and memory.

Musically, the track begins from the intimacy of piano before widening into a fuller folk arrangement. Synths, organ, acoustic and electric guitars, and firm drums gradually add colour without disrupting the reflective mood. The production gives the song scale, but never strips it of its sense of stillness.

The single also deepens the meaning of 'Jumping at Ghosts'. The album exists partly because of Julie’s generosity, with money she left to the artist helping fund the record after her death in 2023. That history makes the project inseparable from friendship, remembrance and the complicated process of continuing to create after losing someone who believed in you.

‘Green and Blue’ is a warm, patient piece of songwriting about learning that moving forward doesn't always require motion. Sometimes, the most important thing is simply to wait in the blue.
