BR!LEY turns one-sided friendship into an addictive lo-fi kiss-off on ‘BEST FRIEND’

There's a very specific kind of frustration at the centre of ‘BEST FRIEND’. It's the moment when you realise a friendship only seemed close because you were doing most of the emotional work.

BR!LEY takes that realisation and turns it into a sharp, understated indie-pop track that feels more satisfying because it never tries to make the situation sound more complicated than it is.

The Orange County artist pairs a relaxed lo-fi atmosphere with alt-pop production, creating a sound that feels casual on the surface while the lyrics steadily sharpen underneath. That contrast works well, as the track is easy to sink into, but its message is anything but passive.

At just 16 years old, BR!LEY already shows a strong instinct for writing from direct emotional experience. ‘BEST FRIEND’ isn't interested in offering sympathy to the person being called out. Instead, it focuses on the imbalance itself: someone who happily takes attention, validation and energy, then disappears the moment the friendship demands anything in return.

There are clear parallels with the intimate, emotionally direct songwriting associated with artists such as girl in red and The Backseat Lovers, but BR!LEY’s appeal comes from how naturally the sentiment is expressed.

‘BEST FRIEND’ is catchy, blunt and quietly cutting. It's the kind of song that turns disappointment into something you can replay until it stops bothering you quite so much.
