Carlotta Schmidt’s sophomore album, Overthinker, radiates self worth and acceptance, which makes it a triumph. The 10-track album centres around overthinking, which Schmidt manages to execute well and is reflected in her lyrics and production. Self-produced and self-written by Schdmidt herself and accompanied by her band The Bold, adding even more of a personal touch to the project.
A strength of the album is the movement between different moods and sonic textures without feeling disconnected. On ‘Woman Crush Wednesday’ Schmidt introduces a playful and upbeat energy early on, while ‘Rosalie’ and ‘Dream Of You’ feel like a continuation of that through a fuller sound and more energetic pace.
There are moments where Schmidt leans more into emotion creating restraint. ‘Now I Don’t Miss You Anymore’ is stripped-back, allowing Schmidt’s vocals and message in the lyrics to take centre stage. Similarly, ‘I Just Want To Talk To You’ captures the pain of grief and longing that feels intimate rather than emotionally restrained.
The role The Bold and featured artists Dave Eggar and Lyris Hung play is important in helping to shape its sound. The instrumentation consistently supports the emotional direction of each track, whether that be groove-driven guitar work, softer string arrangements, or more expansive on country-influenced ‘Brother’.
‘Two Steps Forward, Twenty Back’ brings the album to an emotional end, tackling forgiveness, distance, and acceptance through building instrumentation and vulnerable songwriting. The track was a fitting choice to bring a project that is built around reflection and self-awareness. Overthinker, shines a light on Carlotta Schmidt as both a songwriter, and producer who uses her music as an outlet while spreading a message of empowerment.
