There’s a quiet confidence to Crescent that feels increasingly rare. At a time when so much guitar music races to make its point in under three minutes, the Hartlepool four-piece stretch out, dig in, and let their ideas simmer. With 'Milogather Part I' and 'Milogather Part II', released as a paired statement, they introduce themselves with a slow, magnetic pull.
'Milogather Part I' is deceptively straightforward. Built on a steady rhythmic sway, it moves with an easy physicality, the kind of track that feels as though it’s breathing rather than performing. Caleb Hay’s vocal delivery carries a disarming candour, circling themes of affection and uncertainty without overplaying them. There’s something endearingly off-balance in the way the song approaches intimacy. It’s understated, but never slight.
Then comes 'Milogather Part II', and the atmosphere deepens. Millie Jones steps forward here, and the shift is palpable. Where 'Part I' feels tentative and searching, 'Part II' confronts. The bassline locks into a hypnotic groove, while guitars stretch outward into more expansive territory. Jones’ vocal performance is rawer, almost incantatory at times, capturing the strain of giving more than you receive.
What makes these two tracks compelling is their dialogue. Linked tonally and emotionally, they feel like pages torn from the same journal at different moments in time. Crescent allow silence and space to do as much work as distortion and crescendo. Their dynamic control, shaped by coastal stillness and a shared affection for blues-tinged psychedelia, gives the songs room to evolve organically.
As the first release in a run leading to their forthcoming EP 'Lamentations', 'Milogather' signals intent. Crescent are here to build something that resonates with all of us, leaving a lasting impact by its end.
