Curly Mouth’s Watermelon & Ginger is messy, ambitious, and a bit all over the place—in other words, it’s got proper personality. Across 19 tracks, this thing refuses to sit still for even a second, jumping from scrappy folk to glitchy chaos to dreamy indie detours like it’s got somewhere urgent to be at all times.

When it hits, it really hits. Tracks like ‘Calm Me Down’ and ‘Gotta Leave Without Running’ show off Curly Mouth’s knack for sticky melodies and emotionally blunt lyrics that don’t overthink themselves. There’s a rawness here that feels refreshingly unfiltered, like ideas being recorded the moment they arrive.

But yeah—there’s a lot going on. Sometimes Watermelon & Ginger feels like it’s trying to be five different albums at once, and not all of them are equally strong. A few stretches drift without much direction, and the constant stylistic switching can leave you slightly unmoored.

Still, that chaos is kind of the point. This is an artist clearly more interested in chasing ideas than tidying them up, and while it doesn’t always land cleanly, it never feels boring.

Watermelon & Ginger is rough around the edges in a way that feels intentional—and oddly addictive because of it.
