When a musician known for weaving magic into other people’s visions steps into the spotlight alone, there’s always the question of what will they sound like when finally left to their own devices? With 'New Birth', Eliza Marshall delivers an answer that’s as thrilling as it is unexpected, a tapestry that feels both deeply personal and endlessly expansive.

Across these three compositions, Marshall abandons the comfort of being “just the flautist,” embracing instead a fearless spirit of exploration. This is a collection where her classical training, global travels, and love for minimalist textures all collide in shimmering harmony.

'First Light' feels like stepping into an unfamiliar landscape at sunrise. Percussive pulses echo throughout, while the flute drifts above, at times plaintive and at others ecstatic. There’s a meditative quality as it plays, evoking that tender moment when the world stirs before the day fully begins.

But it’s 'Our Times' that truly captures Marshall at her most daring. Inspired by the hypnotic repetition of Steve Reich, this track shimmers with intricate interlocking patterns. Balafon grooves and tribal chants blur into each other, creating a mesmerising spell that simultaneously feels ancient and futuristic.

The collaborations on this EP imbue each track with a deep, organic warmth. You can feel the exchange of ideas and the trust in each other’s artistry, a beautiful embodiment of Marshall’s belief in global cross-pollination.

Eliza Marshall has long been the hidden force behind some of music’s most luminous moments, but 'New Birth' proves that her own voice has been waiting to emerge. With this new EP, she invites us to listen deeper, to feel more openly, and to remember that sometimes, the most powerful journeys happen when you finally allow yourself to be seen.
