Ellijai has been moving fast throughout 2026, but ‘Skinny Boyfriend’ feels like the moment everything really clicks into place. Bursting with guitars, synths, attitude and one enormous chorus, the Glasgow artist sounds completely at home in the louder, more mischievous version of herself she unveils here.
At its core, the song is about obsession in its most intoxicating form. The object of affection is all messy hair, guitar slung over the shoulder, impossibly cool and just enough danger to make walking away feel completely unrealistic. She leans into that attraction with a huge amount of personality, turning every contradiction into part of the appeal.
The writing is flirtatious without becoming throwaway, and the performance has a knowingly chaotic energy that makes the whole thing feel immediate. And Ellijai manages to capture the thrill of being completely consumed by someone who probably knows exactly what they are doing.
Musically, the track is a blast. Punchy guitars collide with driving electronics, while the production keeps everything moving at a relentless pace. Her vocal performance is especially strong, as she moves from teasing and controlled to full-throttle without losing any of the song’s character, and when the chant-along chorus arrives, it feels built for packed rooms and raised voices.
For an artist still only eighteen, Ellijai already sounds remarkably comfortable with scale. ‘Skinny Boyfriend’ is bigger, bolder and more colourful than much of her earlier work, but it still carries the emotional directness that has helped her build such strong momentum.
With BBC Introducing support, an increasingly impressive live reputation and a debut album already on the horizon, Ellijai looks to be entering a seriously exciting phase. ‘Skinny Boyfriend’ is explosive, addictive and overflowing with personality; easily one of her most confident releases so far.
