Energy Whores Have Never Sounded Quite Like This Before. That’s the Whole Point...

With a new face joining the outfit, Energy Whores are exploring sounds and textures that bring a fresh creative vision to an already established band

There is a version of Energy Whores that arrives with sirens blazing. ‘Hey Hey Hate!’, the opener from their January 2026 album Arsenal of Democracy, is that version: sharp, confrontational, politically loaded and built for maximum impact. It is very good. ‘Fade to Gray’, their new single, is something else entirely, and the distance between the two says a great deal about where this band is headed.

Co-produced with DJ and producer Frank, ‘Fade to Gray’ operates on a slower, more deliberate frequency. The foundation is minimal: a fractured drum loop, synth textures that accumulate rather than announce themselves, and a melodic sensibility that Carrie Schoenfeld has described as echoing 1960s pop filtered through a modern electronic lens. The result sits somewhere between indie and electronic without fully committing to either, which turns out to be exactly the right place for a song about inhabiting the space between two states.

That theme, of existing somewhere between connection and detachment, between certainty and its quiet erosion, is the emotional core of the track. Schoenfeld puts it in terms that are both abstract and precise:

“When a dream and reality have no border, like the ocean meeting the sky in the fog.”

It is a lyrical image that the production earns rather than simply illustrates.

The track’s most striking moment arrives late, when a transformed vocal motif re-emerges, processed and altered, woven back into the arrangement at the point where the song tips from reflection into something more unresolved. It does not offer resolution. It does not seem to want to.

For a band whose identity has been built on friction and confrontation, ‘Fade to Gray’ represents a genuine expansion of range. The edge is still present. It has simply been turned inward, where, it turns out, it cuts just as cleanly.

Energy Whores are not softening. They are sharpening something different. Pay attention.
