INTERVIEW: DOM MALIN

With his new single "bloodmoon", Dom Malin continues his ascent as one of the UK’s most compelling indie-folk voices — a storyteller attuned to the fragile poetry of everyday moments. Following the warmly received “Tapping Out”, which garnered nods from tastemakers like Alexrainbird Music and EARMILK, Malin returns with a track that feels both expansive and intimate, built on sweeping textures and a deep emotional undercurrent.
Malin’s artistry lies in his ability to distil vast feelings into grounded imagery. "bloodmoon" finds him gazing skyward, drawing parallels between the celestial and the emotional — the eerie glow of a lunar eclipse mirroring the quiet pull of someone no longer near, but never fully gone. It’s a song about the gravitational ties we keep, even in silence, even at a distance.
We sat down with Dom once more to chat all about "bloodmoon", the story around it and what's next in this exclusive interview with FLEX!

Hey Dom, welcome back to FLEX! How are you doing?
So happy to be here with you. I’m feeling great — new music is out, I just ran a successful Kickstarter for my 2026 project, and I’ve already booked a bunch of shows around the UK. So yeah, feeling grateful and excited for what’s ahead.
Congratulations on your new single bloodmoon! Sum it up for us in three words for our readers?
Melancholy. Home. Summer.
‘Blood Moon’ feels both intimate and cinematic. Can you walk us through the moment or memory that sparked the idea for this track?
It all started when I opened for Hazlett in Seattle. I remember the first time I flew into the city — after a long flight from London, the air hostess welcomed us to the Emerald City. That phrase stuck with me; it felt poetic and magical. That was the seed. When I returned a couple of years later, something about the place — the energy, the light, the memories — made me reflect on connection and how the universe sometimes gently pulls people together. That’s where Blood Moon came from — a personification of longing and affection wrapped up in something cosmic.
You’ve mentioned that time spent in the States influenced some of the Americana touches in your sound. Can you tell us more about that experience and how it shaped your creative direction?
I’ve always felt drawn to American music — there’s a depth to it, a kind of raw honesty that’s hard to ignore. Being out there gave me a new lens: the landscape, the vastness, the changing seasons — they all made their way into my writing. Even the colours felt different. I think the Americana influence really shows in how I approach storytelling now — it's slower, more grounded, but still full of emotion and movement.
From ‘Tapping Out’ to 'bloodmoon' it feels like you’re entering a more confident phase as an artist. How would you describe your creative evolution over the past year?
I think that confidence has come through connection — through community. I’ve been lucky to find a space where I can experiment and be myself. Every release teaches me something new and pushes me to grow, both sonically and emotionally. I’m figuring out not just what I want to say, but how I want people to feel when they hear it.
You’ve built a strong community through TikTok and Patreon. How have those platforms impacted your connection with fans and your approach to releasing music?
It’s been massive. I’ve always wanted to create a space that feels like you’re grabbing a coffee with a mate — somewhere relaxed, honest, and full of heart. Patreon and TikTok have made that possible. It’s not just about releasing music anymore; it’s about building something together. From helping choose masters and artwork to celebrating release day, it’s become this shared journey. That’s what makes each release feel so special — it belongs to all of us.
Where do you usually turn for inspiration when you're in a writing rut?
Honestly, if I’m in a rut, that’s usually my body telling me to slow down. Travel can be intense, and I find that being home — in my own space — helps me reset. I give myself time to decompress, and usually the ideas start surfacing when I least expect them. Sometimes the best thing I can do for a song is not write it right away.
And finally, please share with us more about your upcoming collaborative EP Dom & Luna, with Luna Keller!
Luna and I have been touring together for the last few years, and during that time, we’ve written a lot of music side by side. This EP is a collection of songs from the road — stories from our time together, and reflections on how we’ve grown as artists and friends. It feels like a full-circle moment. It’s coming out two years to the day since we first met in the UK, and releasing it together feels like the perfect way to celebrate everything we’ve built.
