Interview - J Pierce

UK-based musical artist J Pierce is carving out a lane for himself with his unique blend of potent raps and enchanting melodies across genres of AfroRnB and Hip Hop.

He returns with his brand-new highly anticipated six-track extended play, Back To The Essence.

We sat down with J Pierce to discuss his music and much more. Here's what he had to say:

Hey J Pierce, welcome to FLEX! How are you?

What’s good? I’m alright thanks. Steady enjoying the last days of summer.

Congratulations on your new EP ‘Back to the Essence’ - what inspired this particular project?

Thanks, appreciate it. It was inspired by a (solo) trip back home to the Motherland, Burundi, my home country. Doing a lot of soul-searching. Gaining a deeper and truer understanding of myself and the world that I’m in. It’s about self-discovery, romance, and more.

And do you have to be in a certain mood to write?

Not really. Sometimes the more moods the better because then you capture a wider range of emotions. I just have to minimize distractions.

How was the recording and writing process?

Fun, draining, adventurous, scary, a lot. Gate 7, the intro, took the longest to write because I wanted to be very intentional with what I was saying. Impression wrote itself in literally a few moments. Recording was a great learning experience, I’m in good hands with my engineer A Class. Altogether it was really fulfilling. I learnt more about the craft of songwritng and production. Got me excited for the next one.

For viewers who don’t know J Pierce, how would you describe your sound?

Blue-tinted introspective Rap and warm Afro RnB.

And what are some of those activities that you engage yourself in when you aren't writing or recording in the studio?

Love Sports. Football and Boxing. I like to read and enjoy a good novel. I Model, so sometimes I’ll be at a shoot. Besides that, chilling out with friends.
