Interview - Novisce

Prepare to go on a musical journey with "C'est Capital," NOVISCE's debut single. This is not just any release; rather, it's a brand-new, thrilling exploration of the diverse electro-pop realm created by NOVISCE's mastermind, Jean-Charles Guichardot.

We sat down with NOVISCE to discuss his music and much more. Here is what he had to say:

Hey NOVISCE, welcome to FLEX! How are you?

Hello FLEX, thank you very much for having me. I'm doing alright despite the terrifying political climate in France. We hope that the new Popular Front (left wing) will offer us a solution against the National Rally (right wing) and the madness of our president, who is completely disconnected from the reality of his people.

Congratulations on your debut song 'C'est Capital' - what inspired this particular track?

Thank you very much. This track was written in reaction to the absurdity of a phrase from Macron: "I cross the street, I find you a job"... that he said in 2018. I often write in reaction to things that upset me, touch me, or make me question things.

And do you have to be in a certain mood to write?

Anger, injustice, or strong emotions are often the basis of my writing. That's how my texts come to me, in a process of reaction for the most part. Sometimes I also just play with words until I find a subject that seems interesting to me and that I want to explore. For composition, it's a bit different... I often start with the guitar, with melodic and rhythmic structures before trying to find the melody for the words. I make demos with guitar and vocals. The song has to exist just with guitar and vocals.

How was the recording and writing process?

After a discussion with Daran, my artistic director and arranger since 2021, once we agree on a definitive guitar-vocal version, the arrangement phase begins. This was the process for "C'est Capital" and all the tracks on the upcoming album. We did pre-productions in November 2022 at La Rodia in Besançon before locking ourselves away with Daran and Marie-Céline Jules (my cellist) to make the album in Jura at La Corbière studio for three weeks in Spring 2023. Daran produced, mixed, and arranged the album before it was mastered at Globe Audio in Bordeaux.

For viewers who don't know Novisce, how would you describe your sound?

I would say that I belong to a French music movement, with a strong sense of engagement, where the urgency of a voice, words, and a cello merge into an electro/pop landscape.

And what are some of those activities that you engage yourself in when you aren't writing or recording in the studio?

I work on my voice, and my instrument, and I strive to do everything to make Novisce exist: finding dates, and partners like Laury, my publicist, to consider an album release in Autumn 2024 under the best conditions. And doing everything to promote this album on stage! It's tough but not impossible. I also do road missions in show technology to survive financially while waiting for Novisce to allow me to live. Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to express myself.
