Thank you for sitting down and talking to FLEX. Can you tell us a bit about the origins of OWN DEVICES?
Fate brought us together at our college music studio in Harrow when one of us walked in on the other recording a Jimi Hendrix cover for a session. Once we got in a room together and jammed, the synergy was so electric, that we had to capture the thunder and bottle it up.
Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?
There are so many but to name a few.. Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, Thundercat, Erykah Badu.
Congratulations on your brand-new song 'Blue Light' - what inspired this particular track?
Thank you. "Blue Light" was inspired by a digital burnout and an episode of Black Mirror. We live in a world surrounded by digital distractions, the song is a reminder not to let smartphones dictate our lives, to be present and think for ourselves.
How do you channel personal experiences into your songwriting, and what do you hope listeners gain from connecting with your music?
We tend to let things come to us naturally, every process is unique to the song. We hope that listeners can resonate with our songs on a personal level, or just enjoy the vibes.
Each aspect of music – writing, recording, practising, and playing live – offers something different. Can you share a particularly meaningful moment from each?
Writing the lyrics for “Blue Light”. These hit us entirely out of the blue (unintentional pun)
Recording the groove for “Selfless” was the first thing we jammed that day. (Can’t remember what we ate that morning though!)
Practise, if done enough often leads to ideas so it’s a win-win really. A chef keeps his tools sharp whilst trying out new recipes, and some of those recipes will probably turn into a tasty dish! The most meaningful moment playing live is in the future, in front of whoever’s reading this! Follow the socials to stay updated on that!
Is there a song in your repertoire that holds a particularly deep personal meaning for you? Can you share the story or inspiration behind it?
They all hold personal meanings to both of us, but to mention one I’d say “Selfless”, which is all about the power of finding inner strength in the darkest of times.
What are your goals for the future with OWN DEVICES?
Start a cult and help keep guitar music alive!
What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from your music?
That you can do anything, if left to your own devices.
To wrap things up, is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers?
If you’ve read this far, come follow us and of course say hi!
