Interview w/ HEXX

We sat down with HEXX to chat about the release of new single 'Hoax'. We dive into what inspired their fantastic sound. Be sure to check out the single at the bottom and follow their story!

Thank you for sitting down and talking to FLEX, can you tell us a bit about how you got into music?

Toni - We all have different stories for how we got into music. From choirs, learning instruments etc. But what we have in common is we all found interest in music from the shows we watched growing up. All of us found joy in singing along to Disney songs, and through that and other experiences our interests in music kept growing as we grew up.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

Toni - For Musical influences, I would say Ariana grande, Christina Aguilera, Madison beer. We’re pretty diverse when it comes to artists we like, so hopefully in the future we can experiment with sounds that include other influences of ours.

Congratulations on your brand-new single 'Hoax- what inspired this particular song?

Jess - For this song we drew inspiration from the femme fatale archetype, that most girls love, it’s supposed to be giving those empowering and alluring vibes of female spy’s, like in "Charlie's Angels". We also wanted it to give a sultry pop sound of early 2000s artists like Christina Aguilera, while also being a little light- hearted, as the melody particularly in the chorus is quite eccentric. This track should hopefully channel that nostalgic energy, and what we definitely want is for it to feel both fresh and familiar simultaneously.

How do you channel personal experiences into your songwriting, and what do you hope listeners gain from connecting with your music?

Jess - I suppose with this song in particular, it was more like channeling an alter ego, rather than using actual experiences, since it’s supposed to be film inspired. Watching movies and listening to other girl and boy bands definitely helped a lot. We just hope listeners feel empowered listening to this track, it’s all about girl-power, it is supposed to be exciting.

Each aspect of music - writing, recording, practising, and playing live - offers something different. Can you share a particularly meaningful moment from each?

Riya - I would say a really valuable writing and recording experience was for our first single slo-mo, we were really fresh as a group and still getting used to sharing ideas and working creatively together. Going to Jess’ place for writing sessions also allowed us to bond as a group more! Recording that single with each other was a meaningful journey, we learnt a lot about each other through our amazing first single and we are so proud of it. We always have a laugh practising covers for social media in the studio and while we haven’t yet had a chance to play live, we can’t wait for the day that we take the stages by storm and show our charm as a girl group

Is there a song in your repertoire that holds a particularly deep personal meaning for you? Can you share the story or inspiration behind it?

Riya - We have a really special unreleased song that we worked on last year that felt quite personal to each of us, which is about finding your place in the world and realising who you are truly meant to be. While writing it we drew from individual experiences since each of us have definitely been in situations where we feel like we don’t belong. We felt this was a relatable concept that can resonate with anyone, regardless of background or circumstance and, having been through hard times ourselves, we wanted to channel a more positive energy towards these feelings and show a bit of vulnerability and great strength at the same time.

What are your goals for the future with your music?

Jess - I’d say our goals for the future would be just creating music that resonates with listeners and showcases our unique style. We definitely also aspire to collaborate with lots of other artists, expanding our creative horizons and exploring new genres. I think that would be a big win for us all.

What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from your music?

Toni  - For us we just want people to feel empowered and to have fun, you know. The greatest feeling is when you’re listening to a song and it give you a confidence boost, especially for women and girls. The overall message we want listeners to take away from our music is ‘you are worthy and capable of anything’.

To wrap things up, is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Toni - Anyone who is new to HEXX we want you to know we are hoping to expand and improve everyday. Due to us being independent there’s certain projects that may take a while but we promise every single we put out will be worth it. Thank you x
