There are artists who make music, and then there are artists who mean it. iSandi, the South African singer, songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist, belongs firmly in the second camp. With ‘Joina’, her new single released today, she delivers something genuinely rare in the current landscape: a song with a soul, a purpose, and the craft to carry both.
Rooted in the sweeping landscapes of the rural Eastern Cape where iSandi grew up, her music has always carried the weight of the world it comes from. Raised on fairytales and folklore by her aunt, storytelling runs deep in her DNA — and on ‘Joina’, that gift is turned toward something urgent. The track is a call to unity, addressing the realities of substance addiction while wrapping its message in warmth rather than judgement, offering comfort to those caught in its grip and a rallying cry to those around them. It is, in iSandi’s own words, music that understands its own “moral weight” — that it can “heal, harm, unite or divide.”
She has clearly chosen to heal.
Produced and mixed by Mark Beling — a collaborator iSandi has worked alongside before, including on the 2024 collective track ‘Together We Are Stronger’ — and mastered by Randy Merrill at the legendary Sterling Sound, ‘Joina’ arrives with the polish its message deserves. iSandi’s Afro-experimental sensibility, woven through with Western harmonic language, creates a sound that feels both intimately South African and expansively global in its reach. This is music designed to cross borders as easily as it crosses genres.
The single forms part of RADA Unearthed Volume 3, a compilation from RADA Unearthed, the music arm of a humanitarian organisation whose model is as compelling as its artists: royalties flow back into community projects, making every stream an act of participation. For iSandi, who has been affiliated with RADA since 2023, the alignment is natural. “It is refreshing to see an organisation like RADA use music not just as entertainment, but as a tool for healing, awareness and inspiration,” she has said.
Since her debut EP Intyatyambo in 2022 — a title that speaks directly to growth and flowering — iSandi has shared stages with Vusi Mahlasela and Bongeziwe Mabandla, two of South Africa’s most celebrated musical voices, and her own star has been rising steadily alongside them. ‘Joina’ feels like a significant step forward: confident, compassionate, and lit from within by an artist who understands exactly why she makes music.
With a music video to follow on 11 April and a new EP on the horizon for later in 2026, this is a moment to pay close attention. iSandi is building something meaningful — one song at a time…
