Kai Moa makes chaos feel cinematic on debut EP 'Some of My Best Friends Are...Electric Sheep'

There's a thrilling sense of discovery running through 'Some of My Best Friends Are...Electric Sheep'. Kai Moa’s debut EP is the work of a producer throwing every door open at once, pulling from IDM, industrial electronics, ambient music, jazz and techno without ever letting the release settle into something predictable.

The opening track '≠ What It Is' makes that ambition clear immediately. Jagged rhythms and abrasive electronic textures create a fractured, futuristic atmosphere before the piece suddenly shifts into something more spacious and psychedelic. Piano chords emerge, jazz-inflected harmonies begin to bloom, and his own drumming takes over with a frantic, almost explosive intensity.

But that tenacity makes ‘(Sea)’ all the more effective. Compared with the more restless energy elsewhere on the EP, the track offers a noticeably more tranquil moment, allowing the EP to exhale for just a moment. Its calmer atmosphere gives the wider release extra shape and proves he is just as compelling when working with space and restraint as he is when piling on rhythm and distortion.

Across the EP, his background as a drummer gives the music a distinctive pulse. Even the most abstract passages feel grounded in movement, while the production constantly rewards close listening with small details, unexpected transitions and shifting layers.

There are obvious points of connection with artists such as Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada and Autechre, but 'Some of My Best Friends Are...Electric Sheep' never feels beholden to any one influence.

Inventive, restless and wonderfully immersive, this is a debut packed with imagination. Kai Moa sounds less interested in finding a lane than in building an entire motorway interchange of his own.
