Few songs manage to articulate the strange contradictions of contemporary life quite as effectively as 'Fear The War'. On their latest single, Irish five-piece Maicín take a subject that could easily become heavy-handed and instead transform it into a portrait of the guilt, anxiety and emotional dislocation that comes from witnessing global tragedy while carrying on with everyday routines.
Inspired by the emotional aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, 'Fear The War' examines the unsettling gap between personal comfort and collective catastrophe, exploring what it means to sit in a pub, watch a football match, or scroll through a phone while knowing that somewhere else lives are being irreversibly altered.
Musically, the band continue to carve out a sound that feels increasingly difficult to categorise. Their self-described “Channel-Surf Rock” remains an apt description, with elements of jangle-pop, folk, indie-rock and new wave colliding in unexpected ways. Under the guidance of producer Oli Deakin, the arrangement feels constantly in motion. Lofty guitars sit alongside omnichord textures, harmonica lines drift through the mix, and lap steel adds flashes of melancholy that subtly reinforce the song’s themes.
But what makes the single particularly compelling is its refusal to settle into predictable patterns. Just as the lyrics wrestle with uncertainty, the music frequently shifts between moods. Moments of brightness are interrupted by darker undercurrents, while catchy melodic passages coexist with a growing sense of unease.
Frontman Matt Hurley’s songwriting is central to the song’s success. His observations are sharp and thoughtful, avoiding the simplistic slogans that often undermine politically-minded music. The song isn’t really about war itself as much as it is about the way modern society processes conflict through screens, headlines and fleeting attention spans. The fear comes not only from the events being observed, but from recognising how easily they become background noise.
The track also feels like another significant step forward for a band already building impressive momentum. Their recent successes on the live circuit and growing catalogue of acclaimed singles have established them as one of Ireland’s most intriguing emerging acts, and 'Fear The War' strengthens that reputation further.
At its heart, this is a song about the emotional contradictions of caring deeply, feeling powerless, and attempting to continue with ordinary life regardless. Here, Maicín have created a thoughtful, affecting piece of songwriting that captures a feeling many people struggle to articulate.
