A lot of relationship songs are built around turning points - the moment things fall apart or the moment someone finally walks away. “Relapse” isn’t interested in either of those. Maria Ellis focuses on what happens in between, when the outcome is already clear but the behavior hasn’t caught up.

The track moves with a quiet confidence. The production is streamlined, with a low-end groove that carries most of the momentum. It doesn’t rely on dramatic shifts or big drops, which keeps the focus on the repetition baked into both the music and the lyrics.

There’s an influence from early-2000s pop and R&B running through it, though it’s handled with restraint. Instead of recreating that era outright, Ellis pulls from its structure - tight hooks, rhythmic vocals, and a strong sense of melody.
